Horace Ivy Sons, 84, a native of Berwick and a resident of Patterson for 60 years, passed away at Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City at 11:50 AM on Sunday, December 11, 2011, due to complications from a respiratory illness.
Horace was a "Jack of all Trades", mastering many professions during his life including, alligator hunter, fur trapper, shrimper, carpenter, musician, and offshore supply vessel cook. He loved cooking, sport fishing, hunting, gardening, country music, westerns, and working in his shop. Horace was also known for his great stories and wise sayings. He will be missed by his beloved family and friends.
Horace is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Blanche (Simoneaux) Sons, a Patterson native and retired hairdresser; and their three sons, David Sons and his wife Janet of Patterson, Dennis Sons of Patterson, and Darryl Sons and his wife Tammy of Carencro. He is also survived by four brothers, Justin Sons, Jr. and his wife Delores of Hesmer, Mervel Sons and his wife Patsy of Bayou Vista, Jimmy Sons and his wife Betty of Peachtree, MO, and Barry Sons of Decatur, GA; five sisters, Zelda Fromenthal of Berwick, Irma Lee Lombas of Bayou Vista, Shirley Rock and her husband Aaron of Braxton, MS, Paulette Wilson and her husband Willard of Coteau, and Dianne Sons and her companion Ovay Rogers of Berwick; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Justin Sons, Sr. and Lydia (Granier) Sons; two brothers, Ballard Sons, Sr. and Lloyd Sons; and two sisters, Leola and Myrtleen, who died at a young age.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 14, at Ibert's Mortuary in Patterson, for family at 7:00 AM, and guests at 8:00 AM until 10:45 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1011 First St. in Patterson, with interment in St. Joseph Cemetery.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the exceptional care given to Horace by the staff of Teche Regional Medical Center. A very special thanks to Clayton Diaz, a true friend.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to help alleviate funeral expenses.
