Larry James Schexnayder, 75, a native of Lafayette and a resident of Baldwin for the past 42 years, passed away at his home with his family by his side in the evening hours of Wednesday, October 4, 2017.

Larry was a heavy equipment operator, having worked for 33 years for the State of Louisiana, Department of Transportation and Development, retiring in 2000, and then almost immediately going to work with the St. Mary Parish Government where he work for another 11 years until retiring again in 2011. Some of Larry's favorite pastimes were reading the newspaper and growing and tending to his vegetable garden and fruit trees, much of which he would lovingly give away to family and friends.

Those he leaves to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 56 years, Rita May Picard Schexnayder; two daughters, Rita Faye Johnson and her husband Michael Johnson Sr. and Tammy Marie Schexnayder; two grandchildren, Michelle LeBlanc and her husband Dean LeBlanc Jr. and Michael Johnson Jr. and his wife Michelle Johnson; four great grandchildren, Logan Johnson, MáKenzey Johnson, Brei Johnson, and Dean LeBlanc III; one sister, Mary Schexnayder; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Whitney Martin Schexnayder Sr.; his mother and step-father, Noelie Oubre Hebert and Everaist Hebert; one brother, Whitney Schexnayder Jr.; one sister, Clara Wiese; and two great grandchildren, Haily Johnson and Joseph Duhon.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday, October 6, 2017, at Ibert's Mortuary in Franklin from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with the Holy Rosary being prayed at 7:00 p.m. Visitations will resume Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. at Ibert's with the funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Following he will be laid to rest in the Franklin Cemetery Mausoleum. Deacon Richard Picard will conduct the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Johnson Sr., Michael Johnson Jr., Dean LeBlanc Jr., Adam Picard Jr., Adam Picard III, and Bobby Ballard. Honorary pallbearers will be Rodney Granger and Donald James Picard.
