Herbert James Bourliea Sr., age 88, a native and lifelong resident of Franklin, passed away at his home with his family by his side on Friday, February 23, 2018.

Herbert was born on October 13, 1929, the youngest of four children born to the late Paul Onesime Bourliea and the late Camella Gauthier Bourliea. He was a graduate of Hanson Memorial High School, Class of 1946. On March 13, 1951, at the age of 21, he enlisted in the United States Army and served stateside during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on March 12, 1953. Following his service in the Army, he met and married the love of his life, Theresa Benoit Bourliea and the two began raising their family. He was a lifelong parishioner of the Church of the Assumption, where he served his church as a Eucharistic Minister and Adult Altar Server, as well as opening the church daily for Masses. In 2002 Herbert was awarded the Diocese of Lafayette Bishop's Service Medal. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Franklin Council No. 1420 and was an adorer at the Church of the Assumption's Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. Herbert was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather as well as a wonderful provider for his family. He worked for 36 years for Shell Oil, retiring in 1989 as Senior Office Supervisor. Some of his favorite pastimes were working in his yard, gardening, and woodworking. But by far, what brought him the greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Those he leaves to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 62 years, Theresa Benoit Bourliea; four children, Herbert J. Bourliea Jr. and his wife Lisa, Mark A. Bourliea, Lisa B. Sellers and her husband John, and Jody P. Bourliea and his wife Karen; three grandchildren, Bret Bourliea and his fiancée Amanda Seibert, Kaylyn S. Martin and her husband Coty, and Kelly Sellers; two great grandchildren, Alyssa and Janey Martin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Paula Bourliea; two brothers, Paul Bourliea Jr. and Rellius Bourliea; and one sister, Daisy B. Taylor.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Ibert's Mortuary on Sunday, Feb. 25, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with the Holy Rosary being prayed at 7:00 p.m., led by members of the Catholic Daughters - Court Assumption. Visiting hours will resume on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Church of the Assumption beginning at 9:00 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest with Military Honors in the Franklin Cemetery. Father Lloyd Benoit will be the Celebrant for the Mass and conduct the services. Pallbearers will be Jody P. Bourliea, John Sellers, Kelly Sellers, Coty Martin, Bret Bourliea, and Willie Bourliea. Honorary pallbearers will be Herbert Bourliea Jr. and Mark Bourliea.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Roland Degeyter and staff, the staffs of Franklin Home Care and Heart of Hospice, and to his caregivers, Trisa James, Peggy Tabor, Sally Hebert, Jennifer Darden, Lisa Sellers, and Vicki Rogers, for the loving and compassionate care given to Herbert.
